20 Things You Should Know About colorwork
I’m not sure if this is the best way to describe what these photographs are about. But it did bring on my “colorwork” moment. The photographs are a series of paintings I did of the same landscape with different color values. The original colors are from some of my paintings that use a lot of white on a black background. The colors from the series are slightly different in tone and vibrancy than the originals.
I love colorwork. I used to live in a world with no color. My mother had a big, white kitchen and my father had a big, white bathroom. They had to take out the color paint from the ceiling, but it was never really an issue as long as I knew what color it was. I would paint anything white. But as time and exposure have passed me by, I’ve come to the conclusion that color work is not for me.
Well that is really not an option here. I can paint, but I can’t make things white. I can’t get the white in my painting to blend into the room and the white in my painting to blend into the floor. White color is a no-no.
As an example of what I mean, here’s a picture of my mother’s dresser. I picked this up after she passed away. My mother had a dresser painted white. The paint was not the issue. It was the white surrounding everything that made it look white. It was ugly. It was boring. It was nothing. So I went to an expensive store and bought a “white” paint. I just like white. So I painted the dresser white.
The reason white is not good is because it is so easy to remove white paint. You can usually find white paint at Walmart for a buck or two, and it is easy to remove. I have found that if I use a paint brush to remove the paint, it takes less time. So white is a no-no.
The good thing about white is that no one can see it at first because it is so easily removed. The bad thing is that it is so bad at hiding any imperfections on the furniture. You cannot see it, but you know it is there.
Black is a terrible thing. It is one of the main reasons I’m obsessed with white. What’s more, it makes you have so many of the same white-colored colors in your house, and it doesn’t really matter if you get it or not. When you use white, you have to look after what you’re wearing.
This is the third point above. I have to disagree with the first point above, that by looking at the colors of the houses, we are also seeing the light of the house in the house. When we are looking at the colors of the houses, there is no light, and you can’t see them.
When the colors of the houses are not white (usually), then the light around the house changes. It is much more subtle. Its more like a change in the ambient light, not like different colors on the wall.
Its like the colors of the house are actually the light in that house. The ambient light, the lighting around the house, the colors of the house itself, whether it is painted or not, the lighting conditions, the colors of the walls and the furniture. Thats what we call “colorwork.
